DEBATE OPENED IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PRAISE FOR MR. WINSTON CHURCHILL. THE NATIONAL WAR EFFORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Address-in-Reply Debate was opened in the House of Representa-. tives last night by Mr. L. G. Lowry (Government, Otaki), who moved the formal motion in reply to the Gov-ernor-General’s Speech from the Throne. The motion was seconded by Mr. E. T. Tirikatene (Government, Southern Maori). Extensions of speaking time were accorded both members, who were applauded at the conclusion of their speeches. New Zealand's war effort was discussed by Mr. Lowl-y, who said ’it was appropriate on such an occasion that appreciation should be reiterated of. Great Britain’s Prime Minister, Mr./ Winston Churchill. No statesman, hfc said, had ever been entrusted with a greater burden. His clear-cut speeches must have left an indelible impression on the minds of all English-speaking peoples, and would find an honoured place in the history of our nation. Mr. Lowry congratulated the people of the Dominion on the way in which they were responding to the country’s war effort, and said that all should strive by word and deed to assist in bringing this war-stricken world back to peace and prosperity. ■- Mr. Tirikatene thanked the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, for the honour conferred on the Maori race in asking him to second the motion.| He recalled that the last occasion on which a similar honour had been done was'in 1888, when the address-in-reply motion was seconded by Sir James (then Mr.) Carroll, who was then a private member. A brief sitting for the transaction of formal business was held in the afternoon. The House rose at 9.45 p.m. till 7.30 p.m. today, when the debate will be resumed" by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland.
