Automobile Association. The membership of the Automobile Association (Manawatu) stands at 3754, of whom 110 are on active service and receive free membership. Park Sports Grounds. At a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night, it was decided to close the Park sports grounds as from Wednesday, April 16. Petrol Rationing. “A saving of approximately 30 per cent, has been achieved in petrol consumption as a result of rationing,” said the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, in an interview yesterday. He explained that the saving quoted applied to the last 12 months. Ratepayers’ Petition. A petition from the ratepayers and residents of River Road, Masterton, urging'that • the council tar seal the road was received at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night. It was decided to refer the petition to the incoming council for consideration when framing next year’s estimates. Fertilisers Rationed. Auckland fertiliser manufacturers have reduced deliveries by 25 per cent. An officer of the Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Association said the demand for fertilisers was so much in excess of manufacturing capacity that the industry had found it necessary to ration supplies in order to spread deliveries over as many farmers as possible. There was no change in price. Mclnnes Sentenced.
William James Mclnnes, 35, slaughterman, who had pleaded guilty at Masterton on November 3, 1940, to assault with intent to commit rape, was sentenced to three years’ hard labour. His Honour said prisoner was a married man and had committed this assault] on a girl of 16. It was a very serious crime and must be severely punished. Girls must be protected.
E.P.S. Parades. Parades of B Company, E.P.S. will be held at 7 o’clock at the -Municipal Hall tomorrow night, and at 1.45 o’clock at the north end of the Waingawa bridge on Saturday. Commemorative Seat. An offer made by Mr. G. H. Clarke, Alexandria Street, Masterton, to donate a seat with a brass plate to commemorate the late Queen Alexandria, was accepted with thanks at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night. Carnival Events. At a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last night, the Masterton Queen Carnival Committee was granted use of the Park on Saturday, March 29, with the right of charging admission and the free use of the Municipal Hall in the evening for the coronation ceremony and dance. Thefts from Clothes Lines.
Sneak thieves operating under cover of the blackout have stolen quantities of washing from outside clothes lines at residences in the Grey Lynn district during the last few nights. Footprints have revealed that planned raiding of clothes lines is being conducted by a man and a woman. They are believed to be working with a motor truck to carry away their spoils. Thefts have occurred recently in other districts and the police are warning householders to be careful of any washing left out at night.
Observance of One-Day Holidays. The observance of odd one-day holidays at a time when the country was being called on for an all-in war effort was condemned by members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce last night, when it was decided to refer the matter to the Associated Chambers of Commerce with a view to representations being made to the Government to have superfluous holidays eliminated. Speakers made it clear that they did not object to the existence of such holidays in normal times, but considered that at present they constituted a hindrance to the prosecution of the country’s war effort,
