TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Prospects for King George Handicap (BY "THE GRAFTER.”) There should be some good racing at the Manawatu meeting on Thursday. Ten horses are listed for the King George Handicap. Augment, after his splendid showing in the Thompson Handicap, will, if the going is heavy, carry considerable support, though the effort this time will not be in the nature of a surprise. Little Robin has not done any racing since he ran second to Serenata in the Summer Handicap at Trentham in January last. His last win was in the President’s Handicap (1 mile, 1 fur and 80yds) at Tauherenikau on January 2. The Iliad gelding is reported to be in splendid form, just now and if he goes to the post fit and well ,will take a lot of beating. . Gladynev has failed to run into a place this season, but Siglow has been well in the money lately. Piastre won at Wellington on Monday, ran a third in the Taranaki Centennial Cup (1 mile and 2J furlongs) behind Night Pilot and Sir Crusoe, ran unplaced in the Paul Handicap, was unplaced in the Rangitikei Cup won by Gay Fox, and in the Tonks Stakes at the Egmont meeting, after having won the Egmont iCup. The Salmagundi gelding on his form at Trentham should command considerable support. Happy Ending has been doing good work on the track and with the colours up lately, and local patrons will seriously consider the chances of the Beau Pere gelding. The restjof the field will be probably passed over by those who study form. The favourites may be Piastre, Siglow and Augment.
Other horses who may run prominently at Awapuni are: — Hurdles: Great Quex, Moradabad. Old Surrey. Autumn Plate: Foxiana, Greek Idol. Gallarda. Woodhey Handicap: War Credit, Star Zone, Blue Border. Cloverley Handicap: Gay Genet, The Whipper, Ring Chief. Awapuni Gold Cup: ..Kindergarten. Sir Beau. Belle Cane. Johnston Memorial Handicap: Night Eruption, Enrich, Black Robe. Te Matai Handicap: Martene, Kalika, Filbert. Riders for Awapuni. Riding engagements for the Manawatu meeting have been announced as under: — W. J. Broughton: Greek Step, Transmitter, The Monarch. B. H. Morris: Foxiana, Kotua, Gladynev. Talenta, Premature (Sires’ Produce Stakes). S. Waddell: The Whipper. Piastre, Black Robe, Myarion, Courting. G. R. Tattersall: Golden Moon, Jumna, Colerica. H. P. Stewart: Wildfire. Caulion. P. Rae: Old Surrey. M. D. Ryan: Sea Quex. An Unlucky Horse. According to some opinions. Phoines was unlucky to suffer defeat in the Newmarket Handicap. On his track work he was regarded as next door to a certainty. He fell when doing a gallop at Caulfield, and this caused a setback in his preparation. Phoines was credited with running five furlongs at Flemington in 58sec. This phenomenal gallop on the eve of the meeting is said to have sent Phoines back a bit. He is a four-year-old gelding by Windbag from Message, by Marconigram—Mascot, by Martian from Mary of Argyle. Mascot won the Auckland Cup and Canterbury Cup. and is a sister to Ardenvhor. a winner of the New Zealand Cup.
Soft Going Makes a Difference. An idea how soft going can affect a horse’s chance in a race can be gathered from the fact that Don’t Forget won the Dunedin Guineas witji 8.10 in Imin 39 l-ssec. He has trained on since the early part of the season but could only gain third place in the Thompson Handicap with 7.114 over a mile run in Imin 44!;sec. What applies to Don't Forget also stands for others, particularly the long-striding type of galloper. Racegoers Puzzled. According to a snapshot of the finish of the Newmarket Handicap. Phoines appears to have beaten All Veil. One writer said: “Newspaper photographs of the Newmarket Handicap finish have racegoers puzzled. They cannot understand how the judge placed All Veil in front of Phoines. when the latter appears to be half a length past the post, with All Veil close on a length inside it.” Melbourne Yearling Sales. The Riccarton trainer A. J. Martin last week handed in his trainee’s licence, and for the duration of the war he has closed his active association with racing. He has been training at Riccarton for about five years, during which he has had a good number of horses through his hands, including Silver Sight, Wagner, Waka, Burglar, Great Night, Dinah Dhu. and Gay Parade, all of whom he turned out to win races. Martin has sold his property at Riccarton to V. Alborri, the wellknown trotting trainer, who will utilise some of the paddocks for spelling some of his horses. Having no present use for the house and the horse boxes, he has leased the property to R. Wilson, who will set up shortly as a trainer of gallopers.
