The Punters. In an American article on methods of punting the writer, commenting on the possibility of real money coming from the investment of a dollar or two, said that the great, majority of backers always started off with moss on the brains and finished up with fringes on their trousers. Pay Roll. Although Pay Roll failed to finish in a place in the Challenge Stakes, she put up a brilliant gallop on the eve of the meeting, and probably the heavy going stopped her. A Long Stride. The Australian jockey, Ted Bartie. who rode All Love in the Sires' Produce Stakes at Flemington, states that he cannot recall a two-year-old with such a long stride as All Love. “I think she must be nearly as big a strider as High Caste,” he said. “Twice she stretched out so far that I did not think she was ever coming down.” i Rider Suspended. | Following the running of the Netherton Hack Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday, the judicial committee opened an inquiry concerning interference with Hunto. The outcome was that W. Ensor, rider of Paymaster, was suspended for a month for careless riding. Waiuku’s Record. History may never repeat itself in connection with Waiuku’s three consecutive wins in the Thompson Handicap. He won as a four-year-old in 1895 with 7.5. in 189 G with 8.13 and in 1897 with 10.3. Ladoga is the only other horse to win more than once consecutively and he scored in 1914 and 1915. Reremoana won in 1925 with 7.7 and again in 1927 with 9.8 in Imin 371 see. equal, to the record for lhe race. Waiuku was a remarkable horse, as his records show that, he won over all distances from four furlongs up to two miles. In 1895 he won the Electric Plate at Riccarton with 9.1 in 47 l-ssec, and earlier in the same season he won over a mile and a-quarter and six furlongs on the same day at the Auckland spring meeting. He won the New Zealand Cup of 1897 and also raced in England. He was got by St. Leger from Musket Maid by Musket, but traced to a mare brought from Australia with pedigree. For that reason he was not accepted as a stud horse in England. On his return to New Zealand, Waiuku got some winners but left nothing within gunshot of his own racing merit. He was nevertheless one of the best performers ever raced in New Zealand. I
Manawatu Meeting. The autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club will be held at the Awapuni racecourse on Thursday and Saturday.
Jockeys Injured. Just after being mounted by E. V. Dye to contest the Karangahake Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday, Funny Fox reared over and gave her rider a heavy fall. Dye remounted and rode Funny Fox, and later Sharmin and Sunny Downs, after which he had to ■receive medical attention and forgo the rest of his mounts. When he fell he injured his ribs, and he will probably have to have a short rest before he resumes riding. Concussion, a broken collarbone and minor injuries were suffered by O. Evans when Gay Seton fell in the Handicap Hurdles. He was admitted to the Waikato Hospital. Career of Circular Note. Very few horses in New Zealand have developed winning form after they have entered their sixth year and the only case comparable with that of Circular Note in recent years that can be recalled is that of Zetes. Circular Note raced twice as a two-year-old without success, and nothing further was 'heard of the Paper Money gelding until this season, when he was being trained at Riccarton by R. Register. He had two successes from that stable, including the Hawkesbury Handicap, when he was awarded first place after a narrow defeat by Sham Boy at Wnikouaiti. He then went into the stable of T. R. George at Trentham and in five starts ho has won four times. In the Ruapehu Handicap at Trentham in January Circular Note accounted for Augment, but, although he has now won six times, he is only now runningout his hack nominations. His total stake-winnings are £915. Circular Note is one of the last remaining links in commission with the two well-known sires Paper Money and Charlemagne 11.. a son of St. Simon, who was imported to the Dominion in 1907. Sister Radius, dam of Circular Note, is the oldest of the surviving brood inarms by Charlemagne 11. She had previously made notable contributions to the turf in New Zealand in Loughrea and Circulation, following a restricted racing career, in | which however, she won at weight- j I for-age.
