CARTERTON

BOWLING . — CLUB COMPETITIONS. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance of bowlers on the Carterton green on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine and the green was in splendid order. IVlesdames E. Clark and R. Daysh provided afternoon tea for which they were accorded a vote of thanks. The following are the results: — Rayner. Hawker, W. Hart, G. Harl (s) beat Dudson, Bassett, Newbould, Sorensen (s), 20/16. Daysh, McCarty, DeLacey. Whyte (s) beat Clark, Pankhurst, W. Steven, Riggs (s), 20/14. Beaven, Lindop, Kilmister, Barber (s) beat C. E. White, Foster, Underhill. Barr (s), 24/20. Booth, A. Thompson, Martin (s) beat Spooner, Simmonds, Harris (s)', 18/17. In the Ladies’ Club pairs competition Miss Berrill and Mrs Robinson (s) beat Mrs Martin and Miss Armstrong (s). GUN CLUB WEEKEND SHOOT. Although the weather was not very favourable at the weekend there was good competition for the trophies donated in aid of the candidature of Miss Holdsworth, the Army Queen in the Masterton Queen Carnival contest. There was a good attendance of shooters. The shooting was excellent. The results were as follow: — Ten bird shoot,' first prize stags head, second sovereign: The following tied: J. Thompson, W. H. Saunders, C. E. Grey, W. A. Thompson and B. Newman. In the shoot-off J. Thompson was first and W. H. Saunders second. Second match, 10 birds; first prize Wedgwood China set, second Wedgwood salad bowl: Five tied with a possible and in the shoot-off J. Thompson and L. Rayner again tied and went on to shoot 17 birds, when Thompson failed, leaving Rayner the winner. Ten bird competition for coffee set, with a cushion for second prize: Four competitors shot the possible, viz., W. A. Thompson, M. Kerins, W. H. Saunders and F. Allen. The shoot-off resulted in W. H. Saunders winning, with F. Allen second. Novice shoot (five birds): Messrs H. Byrn, F. Oakley, C. A. Whiteman, A. McKay, G. Hosking tied. H. Byrn was first in the shoot-off with F. Oakley second. In the absence of Mr M. Kiddie, the club's secretary, Mr J. V. Gustofson carried out the secretarial duties. Tennis Match. The annual tennis match between the men’s section of the Carterton and Kelburn clubs took place on the Carterton Bowling Green Courts on Saturday, and resulted in a narrow win for Carterton. At the conclusion of play Mr D. G. Little, on behalf of the Kelburn players, thanked the Carterton Club members for their generous hospitality and congratulated them upon their win. In doing so he handed the president of the Carterton Club the coveted cup that is competed for each year. Cheers were exchanged and the visitors then left for home. Golf Club. The annual meeting of the Carterton Golf Club will be held in the P. and A. Buildings, Carterton, on Monday. March 24. The election of officers will be among the business to be transacted. Catholic Concert & Dance. There should be a large attendance at the Catholic concert and dance which is being held in the King's Theatre, Carterton, tonight. A splendid concert programme has been arranged and will include artists from Wellington, Masterton and Carterton. At the conclusion of the concert programme dancing will be indulged in till after midnight. A good supper will be provided and the dance music will be provided by Udy's Orchestra. Personal Items. The death occurred at her home at Woburn Road, Lower Hutt, on Thursday last of Mrs Ethel Callander, wife of Mr C. W. B. Callander, at the age of 63 years. Deceased was well known in Carterton where she lived at Connolly's Line. Belvedere, with her parrents, the late Mr and Mrs George Burnett. Possessing a kindly nature she was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends. The funeral took place at the Taita Cemetery yesterday. Dr. and Mrs R. N. Campbell were visitors to Carterton yesterday.
