A communique stated that the Japanese suffered 7000 casualties in a sanguinary five-day battle south . of the Yangtse, opposite Ichang. The Central News Agency said it was the greatest Chinese victory since Taierchuan and Chungsha. According to a Hong Kong message, the Chinese Central News agency reported that a Japanese transport loaded with 500 troops and a large quantity of war supplies was sunk after striking a Chinese mine in the Yangtse River. The news agency said that Chinese naval guerillas laid the mine near Tungliu.
