WAIRARAPA AND EAST COAST SOCIETY MEETING IN CARTERTON TODAY. “NOT A POLITICAL BODY.” 1 The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society was held at Carterton this morning. Mr G. W. Hart presided over a fair attendance of members. Included in the many apologies for absence was one from the President. Mr J. A. McLeod, owing to illness. It was decided to send Mr McLeod a letter wishing him a speedy recovery. Prior to the commencement of business reference was made by the chairman to the death of Mr F. C. Stowell. Masterton, a member of the society for many years. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect and it was decided to send a letter .of sympathy to the relatives. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £560 3s lOd in the Bank of New Zealand and a credit of £4BO 6s 5d in the Post Office Savings Bank, a total credit of £1,040 10s 3d. Receipts since last meeting totalled £2l 19s. Accounts for £lB5 11s 9d were passed. A circular letter was received from the Reciprocal Trade Federation of the United Kingdom (full details of which appeared in the “Times-Age” some time ago) in which the Government’s import restriction policy was criticised and the danger of losing the English butter market was stressed. Mr L. H. Smart (secretary): “It’s a bit exaggerated, of course.” Mr Hart (chairman): “We are not a political body and cannot take the matter up. Unfortunately a lot of it is true.” It was- decided to receive the letter and take no action. The St. Andrew's Ladies’ Guild wrote thanking the society for the use of its chairs and tables, etc., for church functions and enclosed a donation of £1 Is. The letter was received and appreciative reference was made regarding the donation. The caretaker’s report, setting out details of maintenance work carried out at the showgrounds was received.
