The Minister of Harbours and Railways, Mr. Sturrock, presenting the railways budget to Parliament, announced a surplus of £2.400,000, which breaks nearly all records for railway working. He said that more than 700 railwaymen have been released for military duties, and 1200 full-time and 800 parttime men are engaged in munitions production in the railway workshops, which are turning out a great variety of .armaments, including 3.7 howitzers, bombs and armoured-car and machinegun mountings. A committee is being appointed to investigate possibilities of expansion of the workshops.
