MIGHTY AIR BATTLE
OVER STRAITS OF DOVER FIGHTERS MEET ENEMY jBOMBERS. MURDEROUS FIRE FROM GROUND DEFENCES. LONDON, March 13. The mightiest air battle in history is raging Aonight, with a brilliant moon lighting up the Straits of Dover. Raiders began to stream over immediately after dusk and were again over the Merseyside. Another wave has showered hundreds of incendiaries on a town on the south-east coast. Others are over London, south England, west England, north-east England and parts of Scotland. Ground defences are meeting them with murderous fire, and the R.A.F.’s own planes are up in force. The number of our planes participating in stupendous attacks on Germany cannot be disclosed, but it has greatly exceeded the number raiding Britain. Last night’s raiders over the Merseyside were estimated to be 150. A north-eastern town is undergoing a raid which is described as one of the worst. The west Midlands is having its third successive night raid, with many planes also passing over that area and going north.
