The Hon. Adam. Hamilton, a member of the War Cabinet, travelled south from Wellington by the steamer express last night. The Royal College of Surgeons has granted a Diploma of Fellowship to Mr. W. N. Campbell, of Otago, a London cablegram reports. Mr. Fred G. Anderson, Mauriceville West was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday afternoon as the result of injuries he received when he cut his foot with an axe while chopping wood. The appointment is announced of Mr E. Caradus, B.Sc., as Chief Inspector of Secondary Schools in place of Mr E. J. Parr, who is retiring on superannuation at the end of the month. Mr Caradus is an old boy of Auckland Grammar School and a graduate of Auckland University College. The death occurred suddenly on Thursday of Mr William Cuthbert McCaw, a leading Auckland orthopaedic surgeon and chairman of the honorary staff of the Auckland Hospital. Mr McCaw was 51 years of age and had been in practice in Auckland for nearly 20 years. Mr M. F. Luckie’s Wellington mayoral campaign committee yesterday asked him to proceed with his candidature in the forthcoming election. Mr Luckie recalled that he had pledged himself not to withdraw from the contest without consent of his committee; he was therefore obliged to refer to them, not only for advice, but because his course of action was to some extent in their hands. . The death occurred at Palmerston North yesterday of Mr William Benjamin Tooby, father of Mr E. Tooby, of Essex Street, Masterton, at the age of 83 years. Deceased formerly resided for many years in Masterton, where he was held in high esteem. In addition to Mr. E. Tooby, there are left Mrs. W. B. Tooby (wife), Mr. Eric Tooby (son), Otaki, and Mesdames George Milne (Master’s Crescent, Masterton), Colin Hendry (Hastings), and Arthur Cook, Johnsonville, daughters. The funeral will take place tomorrow leaving the Methodist Church, Otaki, for the Otaki Cemetery at 3.30 p.m.
