Residents of Western Samoa have contributed £5,000 for the purchase of a fighter plane. “Samoa’s fighter plane will help to halt Hitler, destroy the Axis, and allow this fail’ isle to remain under the proudest and prettiest flag that ever was flown at the top of a mast,” comments the “Western Samoa Mail.”

Bombs Bring Determination. Writing from Slough, Bucks, an English woman stated: “We know that God is justice and that good will prevail —though to our human sense it may seem far off. It is nice to think that America is with us but, standing as she does for liberty, freedom, and protection to the weaker nations, she couldn't think or act otherwise. . . .

Every bomb only makes our chins go higher with a stronger determination to see this fight through to a finish.” —"Christian Science Monitor.”

Scrap Metal from Rarotonga. In response to a public appeal a considerable quantity of scrap metal has been collected and is being forwarded to New Zealand, states the Rarotonga correspondent of the United Press Association. The old lead collected has been melted down and a weight of over one ton pig lead is being forwarded. In addition there are 18741bs of scrap brass, copper, bronze and zinc. Some of the metal was obtained by divers from the wreck of the Maitai which lies at the entrance to the main harbour of Avarua. The consignment is to be sold and the proceeds paid to the National Patriotic Fund as a further donation from the people of Rarotonga to the war effort.

Manoeuvres Postponed. Because of lack of motor transport, the Army authorities at Auckland last night announced that extensive tactical exercises to be held in the area between Auckland and Whangarei next week had been cancelled. The exercises may be held in a week’s time. Out of 597 motor-lorries required from the Northern Military District for the operations, only 72 were available at a late hour last night. A total of 308 motor-cycles was also needed, but the number in sight tonight was only 32. The difficulties in securing transport have arisen from a last-minute change in the method of impressing the vehicles. This involved the late substitution of a well-thought-out plan by one placing the impressment under the Transport Department.
