UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
CAN BE WITHHELD, FROM MEN FIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Social Security, Mr. Parry, has replied to the recommendation by the Dominion council of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association that unemployment benefits be withheld from fit men who, without reasonable excuse, refuse to accept responsibilities for service with the forces. “The Social Security Commission is empowered to terminate an unemployment benefit or suspend payment of such benefit up to a period of six months,” stated the Minister, “if it is established that any applicant has lost his employment through reasons within his own control or has refused or failed without good and sufficient reason to accept suitable employment, which would include service with the forces.” The Dominion executive of the association has noted the authority of the commission with satisfactoin.
