CARTERTON

BOWLING CHAMPION RINKS COMPETITION. ("Times-Age" Special.) The semi-final in connection with the Carterton Bowling Club's champion fours was played last evening and resulted in a win for Sorensen's rink. The scores were: —Callender, W. Steven, Tucker. Sorensen (s) 22. Larsen. Simmonds, Harrington, Puggs (s) 11. The final will be played between Sorensen's rink and G. Hart's team. A game for the Kelly Cup which is for colts, was played on the Carterton green between a pair from the Park Club (Masterton) and the holders (Carterton). The scores were:—O. Donald and C. Moore (s) challengers 21, Ri Daysh and S. McCarty ts) 12. This is the first game played for the cup in two years. It is understood that a further challenge will be issued by Carterton players.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING AT PARKVALE

Mrs B. M. Adams (vice-president) presided at the annual meeting of the' Parkvale Women’s Institute held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday afternoon. An invitation was received from the Salvation Army to attend their Golden Jubilee meeting in Carterton next month. Arrangements were made to hold a social gathering at the April meeting in place of the usual birthday party which it was decided to forgo owing to the war situation. The annual report was presented by the secretary, Mrs W. Adlam, while the treasurer, Mrs N. Peacock, submitted the balance sheet. It was stated in the annual report that the Institute had made up 21 parcels for troops overseas, and over 300 skeins of wool had been-knitted during the year. Other war work done had been the sending of a hamper of cakes to the Wellington Y.M.C.A. every month since last September. Members had also contributed, 54 garments to the Lady Galway Guild, all of which were in excellent condition. Mrs J. Rayner and Mrs W. Adlam were appointed to represent the Institute at the Carterton meeting today when a discussion between Institutes will be held in regard to sending hampers to the A.N.A. Club, Wellington. Miss O. Wolters was nominated as Federation President and Mrs D. AdnQps for the Federation Committee. Miss' O. Wolters attended the meeting and conducted the election of officers which resulted as follows: —President, Mrs W. Adlam; vice-presidents. Mrs J. Stubbs and Mrs D. Adams; secretary, Miss M. Adlam; assistant secretary, Mrs N. Peacock; treasurer, Mrs N. Peacock; committee, Mesdames L. Rayner, C. Jenson, W. Hammond, E. Rose, N. McKinnon and Misses E. Martin, and M. Stent. The following will take charge of stalls and competitions: Mesdames L. Nolan, W. King, D. Adams, Misses E. Martin, S. ’Rayner, and M. Stent. A competition conducted by Mrs D. Adams was won by Miss H. McKinnon. The monthly competitions judged by Miss Wolters resulted as follows: — Seniors: Sultana cake for Wellington Y.M.C.A., Mrs W. Adlam. 1; Mrs C. Jenson, 2; Mrs L. Rayner, 3. Flowers, Mrs J. Taplin. 1; Mrs L. Rayner, 2; Mrs H. Rayner, 3. Juniors: Sultana cake, Miss M. Adlam, 1; Miss S. Rayner, 2. Flower: Miss H. McKinnon, 1; Miss M. Stent, 2; Miss S. Rayner, 3. Miss J. Phelps was elected a member. During the afternoon the points prizes won during the year were presented by Miss Wolters. The following were the results:—Seniors, cooking, Mrs B. Renall, 1; Mrs L. Rayner, 2. Flowers: Mrs R. Williams, 1; Mrs J. Taplin, 2. Juniors: Cooking and flower, Miss S. Rayner, 1; Miss J. Warrington, 2. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr A. Elkins for auditing the books. The hostesses for the afternoon were the members of the committee. BOY SCOUTS CARD PARTY LAST NIGHT. The weekly card party in connection with the Carterton Boy Scouts was held in the Band Room last evening. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs M. Ticehurst 1, Mrs Mohe 2; men, Messrs M. Ticehurst 1, C. Holland 2. Bank Holiday. Monday next being St. Patrick’s Day, will be observed as a bank holiday in Cartertom Personal Items. Mrs Hills, of Kent Street, Carterton, accompanied by her daughter. Mrs C. E. Lane and child, left yesterday afternoon en route to Timaru, where they will spend a holiday. Mr and Mrs J. A. Wallace, of Carterton, left fast evening for Christchurch. Mrs C. Holland, of Garrison Street, Carterton. has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. St. Patrick’s Concert & Dance. On Monday evening next the annual St. Patrick’s concert and dance will be held. A first class concert programme has been arranged which will include the following: Wellington artistes, Mrs Tracey (songs), Mr H. Twohill (tapdancer);) Masterton artistes. Miss Beulah Hirst (singer and dancer). Miss McMillan, Miss Curry and little Miss ■ Betty Barnes; local artistes, Misses V. and A. Sorenson, Miss V. Irwin, Mr , Alan Goulding, and the Children of ’ the Convent School. The prices of ad- ■ mission are advertised. '
