GOOD LEEKS

HOW TO GROW THEM. ' Ordinary surface watering does not help leeks very much at this season of the year because their roots are deep hi the ground. They require liberal supplies of moisture, however, to enable them to make good stem growth and acquire a mild flavour. A good plan to induce movement in plants which reach a standstill, is to bore holes with a good large dibber between each pair of plants and fill and refill the holes thus made with water. A day or two after a thorough soaking with plain water, the holes may be again filled using liquid manure or water to which a. soluble fertiliser has been added. After another day's interval use the hoe to fill in the holes with loose soil.
