THE QUEEN CARNIVAL
PROTEST AGAINST GAMBLING. (To tne Editor.) Sir, —It is pleasing to read that at least one body of women is protesting about the amount of gambling going on in connection with the Queen Carnival in Masterton. May I congratulate the Women's Natonal Welfare League on their protest. We all know that things other than gambling are going on in this town, under the cover of a war effort, that should not be allowed. It would be very interesting to hear from at least one of our ministers of our churches what they think of the whole business. Surely the churches don’t approve? By their silence one might think so. Your cor-; respondent “Where Are We Heading” did, I think, sum us up only too truly when he said we are fast becoming a drinking, gambling, pleasureloving people. In this Queen Carnival business we are simply spending two pounds to collect one; also, it is just one round of gaiety and nothing more. —I am, etc., DISGUSTED. Masterton, March 12.
