OPAKI SCHOOL

PICNIC AND SPORTS. ENJOYABLE GATHERING. The Opaki School held their sports and picnic at the Masterton Racecourse. the gathering being a very enjoyable one. After lunch foot races and novelty events were held, every child winning a prize. The adult events were won by Mrs Jenkins (married ladies). Miss Valery Gibbs (single ladies), Mrs Holmwood and Mrs Wingate tied in the grandmothers egg and spoon race, Mrs Taylor (nail driving), Mr Gibbs (married men’s egg and spoon race, for Whiteman Bros.' trophy), Mr D. Buick (single men's race and single men's egg and spoon race). | At the end of the sports programme, certificates were presented to swimmers who had been taught by the teacher. Mrs O'Callaghan. Patricia Holmwood received an elementary life saving certificate and also a certificate for swimming 220 yards. Judy Holmwood received a first step life saving certificate and also one for swimming 50 yards. These two girls had received] considerable help in their swimming] from the custodian of the ladies' swimming baths at Masterton. Fay Jenkins and Ngaire Spackman received certificates for swimming 25 yards. ; The Opaki School Committee tender its thanks to the Racing Club for use of the grounds and building and also to all those who worked to make the gathering the success it was. i
