SERIOUS CHARGE

ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. BENCH REFUSES BAIL. Charged with having assaulted a 16-year-old girl with the intent to commit rape, William James Mclnnes, a labourer, aged 35. of High Street. Masterton, was committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence when he appeared before a special sitting of the Masterton Magistrate Court yesterday. Messrs. L. J. Taylor and E. G. Eton, J's.P. were on the Bench. The accused pleaded guilty. In addition to the witnesses reported as having given evidence yesterday morning, Detective-Sergeant W. Kane and Constable A. W. Nalder also gave evidence.

Bail was refused, Mr. Eton observing that the police had had cause to interview the accused some months ago in making investigations concerning an alleged offence of a similar nature.
