Brilliant Sprint By Pay Roli. Pay Roll was brilliant over five in 1.1, the last half in 48, at Trentham yesterady. She was inclined to loaf a little, in contrast to her former habit of dashing into her work, but Wiggins shook her up in the run home and she finished resolutely. She blew after the gallop, which will do her a lot of good. She has grown into a beautiful filly.

Serenata Finishes Solidly. At Trentham yesterday Serenata gave Airline a good start over seven, and was clear of him in the run home to record 1.29. the last half in 52. She finished solidly.

Not Starting. 1 Veldette was withdrawn from the Thompson Handicap at 5.35 p.m. on Monday. Monetary has been taken out of the North Island Challenge Stakes. According to advice from Riccarton. Doubleack and Sparkle are not making the trip. Hearth Impressive. Hearth and Leighnor ran six furlongs at Trentham yesterday. Hearth was going particularly well in front at the end. and she ran the last two in 25. She was impressive. Wanganui Candidates. W. H. Dwyer left Wanganui for Trentham on Monday with Sir Beau and Belle Cane. Wanganui track watchers were not surprised at Sir Beau's defeat at New Plymouth, as it was not expected that the track would suit such a long-strider, and in any case the colt had not been showing his old dash in his most recent gallops. However, the race on Saturday will, no doubt,, have improved him, and he has always raced well at Trentham. Belle Cane looks healthy and well, though she appears bigger than ever, and some think she is in need of a race. However, this filly has always raced well when fresh, and can be expected to run a good race on Thursday. Yesterday Amigo was given his final gallop before leaving for Trentham. Ridden by K. Chote, he went six furlongs on the course proper. He was nearly at top when he reached the peg and. stretching out in fine style, he ran I the first three furlongs in 35/.. the halfmile in a shade under 48. He was eas- I ing up over the last bit, as was only to be expected after such a fast halfmile, his time for the full distance being 1.15. He was blowing a bit after the gallop, but he should be all the better for the effort, and ready to run a good race in the Thompson Handicap on Thursday. He will be ridden by A. E. Ellis.
