Form for Trentham
(BY “THE GRAFTER.”)
The Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham will be opened tomorrow. The principal event will be the Thompson Handicap over a mile. Serenata has been doing excellent work on the track lately. Her last win was in the Summer Handicap (1 mile 3 fur.) at the Wellington meeting in January. This was her last start. Previous'to that she had won the New Zealand Cup, and the Electric Handicap at Masterton (1 mile). She ran a third in the Wellington Cup in January behind Kindergarten j(8.6), and Belle Cane (7.104), carrying 7.0. Doria has shaped well in her track work and has a good winning record. Her chief wins recently have been the Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin on February :22, the Federal Handicap at Dunedin and the Stonyhurst Handicap at Napier Park, while she ran second in the Craven Plate at Riccarton. She struck trouble in the Publican’s Handicap at Dunedin on February 20 and ran unplaced.
Sir Crusoe has won on three occasions out of ten this season. He won the January Handicap at Trentham, the Waiorongomai Handicap at
Otaki with 9.5 up, and the Awatea Handicap at Trentham in October last. When he won the January Handicap at Trentham he was slow to start but came away well at the business end to beat Olympus easily, by a length. His effort will be sure to bring him supporters for the Thompson Handicap.
Amigo has not won since he accounted for the Aidworth Stakes' (9 fur.) at Marton on January 2, having failed to secure a place in his last four starts, and will be ruled out of the Thompson Handicap by followers of form.
Kathbella has been a disappointment. Since winning the Waipipi Handicap at Masterton in October she has done practically nothing with the colours up.
Belle Cane had a good run earlier in the season winning six out of seven races. Since then her record has not been so good, her best being a second to Kindergarten in the Wellington Cup in January. She was unplaced in her last start at Trentham. Whether she is capable of reproducing her earlier form in the Thompson Handicap remains to be seen.
Enrich, Siglow and Hearth have done fairly well this season. The latter has won six times out of 10. her last win being in the City Handicap at Trentham in January. She has had four wins in a row.
Geld Dalb won over six furlongs at Stratford in January. She ran unplaced at Opunake last month and was second in the Flying Handicap at Egmont over 6 furlongs. Lambourn has little to recommend him for the Thompson Handicap, not having won since he accounted for the Gothard Handicap at Woodville in December.
Don’t Forget has won five times this season, the last time at the Banks Peninsula meeting on March 1. The Ring has not been in the picture since she ran second to Hunting Cat at the Hawke’s Bay meeting in January, her last eight efforts having only produced a second and a third. She may, however, be favoured as an outside chance in the Thompson Handicap. The rest of the field calls for little consideration, Augment and White Rajah being most prominent. The best of the outsiders are The- Ring and Hearth.
