STARTLING EXPLOSION

IN COOK HOSPITAL. WATER UNIT BLOWS UP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, March 11. A startling explosion occurred at Cook Hospital this afternoon when a steam-operated water unit in a room adjoining the operating theatre blew up, shattering nearly every pane of glass in the theatre and adjoining rooms. The medical superintendent, Dr. R. J. B. Hall, was conducting an operation at the time, but despite the sensational interruption members of the stafl; proceeded with their work and completed the operation. Fortunately 7 no one was in the room where the explosion occurred. The exploding water unit went rocketing through the ceiling and tiled roof, but though nurses were showered with splintered glass no one received even a scratch.
