WAR WEAPONS
BIG CAMPAIGN IN BRITAIN. WEEK IN MAY SET ASIDE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 9. The City of London, City of Westminster, all metropolitan boroughs, the whole of the county of Middlesex, and the. Essex boroughs of Barking, East Ham, West Ham, Leyton, Ilford, and Walthamstow, will combine to hold a war weapons week simultaneously in May. No objective has been fixed, but attention has been drawn to the large sums subscribed by provincial towns and cities. Liverpool, for instance, raised £11,808,741, Glasgow £10,500,000, Edinburgh £10,234,053, Birmingham £8,145,148, Manchester £7,177,434, and Sheffield £5,017,184. Last week’s war savings total was £12,430,496, of which £4,476,731 was in savings certificates, £3,614,765 in defence bonds, and £4.389,000 from the increase in balaiicss due to depositors in the Post Office Savings Bank and the trustees’ savings banks. The Lord Mayor's National Air Raid Distress Fund now amounts to £2,246,000, an increase’ on the week of £30.000.
