FRENCH THREAT
WARSHIPS TO CONVOY SHIPS WILL USE FORCE IF NECESSARY. NO ACTION FOR FEW WEEKS. Admiral Darlan, the French VicePremier and Foreign Minister announces, states the 8.8. C., that French warships will be used to convoy French merchantships, if the blockade of the British Navy continues. If necessary he states, the warships will use force. He said he would not attempt to take this action for the next few weeks in the hope of reaching some understanding with Britain.
AFRICAN EMPIRE FRENCH FORCES WILL FIGHT ANY AGGRESSOR. STATEMENT BY VICHY (By Telegrnph-r-Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, March 10. At their conference in Vichy Admiral Darlan, and the Government’s Administrator in Africa, General Weygand specifically examined the problem of the defence of the French African empire, states a communique. They confirmed that this defence, while conforming with Marshal Petain's engagements and also keeping within the framework of the armistice convention, would be energetically carried out by French forces alone against any aggressor.
