ITALIAN CRUISER
TORPEDOED BY BRITISH SUBMARINE VICTIM ESCORTED BY TWO DESTROYERS. "ALMOST CERTAINLY SUNK." The torpedoing and almost certain sinking of an Italian cruiser by a British submarine is reported by the Admiralty, states the 8.8. C. An Admiralty communique states that an Italian cruiser of the Condottieri A class escorted by two destroyers, was hit by a torpedo. For two hours the destroyers were seen circling and stopping, as if picking up survivors. The cruisers of this class are ships of just over 5000 tons and carry eight six-inch guns. Originally, there were four in the class but one. the Bartholomeo Colleoni was sunk by H.M.A.S. Sydney on July 19 last year. An Italian communique at the weekend announced that an Italian me-dium-sized warship had been lost in the Central Mediterranean as the result of an explosion, the cause of which was unknown.
