PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL
NAVY-NURSING QUEEN BOXING TOMORROW NIGHT. STRICKLAND—HANHAM BOUT. Those desiring to secure ringside seats at the Strickland—Hanham boxing match at the Opera House tomorrow night can obtain them now as new scaling accommodation has been erected on the stage. Regarding seats and prices the committee states that the 5s seats are practically ringside as they are on a special stand being erected for the occasion. There are only a few close ringside seats at 10s. The seats in the main part of the house will be offered at 3s and 2s. One row in the Dress Circle will be 5s per seat. The Featherston Wrestling Club has a reputation for turning out good material and the members they are sending to Masterton tomorrow night will present first class wrestling. The public is recommended not to miss these contests and the added attraction of the Hadlow Preparatory schodl boys presenting lively boxing bouts. This is a splendid programme.
AIR FORCE QUEEN CAMPAIGN SALE OF ANTIQUES. Many donations of valuable antiques have been macle to the Air Force Queen committee and these are to be sold tomorrow in the Occidental Rooms (opposite Messrs C. E. Daniell’s premises), Queen Street. In conjunction with this a jumble sale will be held at which a wide variety of goods will be offered. 500 CARD PARTY. Tonight in the Odd Fellows’ Hall (opposite Messrs Hugo and Shearers’ shop) the members of the Odd Fellows’ Lodge will conduct a 500 card party on behalf of the Air Force Queen's candidature. The lodge will conduct a series of similar functions in aid of the various queens in the carnival, and card-lovers will, therefore, have the opportunity of assisting them in their efforts in the interests of all committees. Good prizes and supper will be provided.
ARMY QUEEN A SPECTACULAR SHOW. PARADE AND BEAUTY CONTEST. The Army Queen’s mannequin parade and bathing beauty contest held in the Opera House last night drew an exceptionally large crowd, the hall being filled. Many striking and colourful ensembles were presented, and the evening gowns were superbly portrayed by local girls to whom great credit is due for their assistance in making the gathering the success it undoubtedly was. The Army Queen, Miss Marion Holdsworth, was introduced by Mr R. Whyborn. Miss Holdsworth presented the prizes to the winners of the Beauty Contest in a humorous manner which was fully appreciated by those present. The beauty contest resulted: Miss Truscott 1: Miss Snowsill 2; Miss Eastwood 3. The committee especially wishes to thank the following: The judges, Mrs Holgate and Miss Agnes Lucas; the donor of the cup, Miss Sutherland of Gena's Mantles; the firms making displays, C. Smith, Gena’s Mantles, W.F.C.A., Cody’s, Hugo and Shearer and J. Graham and Co.); the stage managers, Messrs H. P. Hugo and G. Daubney; the producer, Mrs E. J. Rich; those responsible for the stage arrangements. Messrs C. Pedersen, Rex Riley and A. Wainscott; Interhouse Military Ballet (under Miss Enid Thompson); Beulah Hirst for her character study dance; the orchestra (under Mr J. Grey); Mr W. L. Butler; Mr Porter (Opera House custodian), and those responsible for the stage fittings, Messrs W. E. Cody, Hugo and Shearers, W.F.C.A.. and Robinson’s Nurseries.
On Thursday night a Masterton "Search for Radio Talent” will be held in the Opera House al 7.30 o’clock in place of the races (previously announced). Those possessing the ability to sing, dance, recite or perform in any manner or play an instrument are asked to send in his or her entry to The Tank not later than 5 p.m. on Thursday. There is no entry fee and judging will be by popular vote. The Army Queen Committee will announce tomorrow the full details of the visit of the Trentham Military Band which will appear here over the weekend.
The Army Queen Committee wish to express their thanks to Mr Geo. Dagg and his staff for their excellent patriotic effort in designing and making the model tank depot stationed at present in front of the Post Office. The tank is a replica of the latest mobile war machine now in use throughout the British Army. The Committee also thanks Mr Syd Smith for signwriting, Mr C. N. Cole for painting the tank, and the Masterton County Council for the use of their lorry.
