TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Riccarton Horses for Trentham (BY "THE GRAFTER,”? PJccarton horses will have a good deal of leeway to make up at Trentham this week as at the autumn meeting last year they had a disastrous time, the only southern winner in the two days being Density. The team looks a much stronger one this time and it might well be a different story.

The Riccarton teams may be made up as follows:—H. and A. Cutts, Wild Fox, Willow Wood, and Shikari; T. H. Gillett, Doria and Palfrey; G. Ridgway, Arctic Dawn and Streamline; C. Emerson, Don’t Forget and Monetary; R. Sutherland, Ann Mie and Halt; F. Roberts. Not Out, Lady Derby, and Bascule; C. C. McCarthy, Trench Fight and Bird of Prey; F. D. Jones, King's Toast and Eramble; H. Nurse, Good Health and Treasurer; F. Christmas, Good Scout and Sir Grey; R. Coveney, Roman Son; Mrs J. Campbell, Wardress; and A. S. Ellis, Rawhamai. H. and A. Cutts have a promising candidate for the Trial Plate in Wild Fox and with her run in the AhurirJ Hack Handicap at Motukarara to harden her off the half-sister by Foxbridge to Wild Chase will be a possibility. even though she will be meeting some smart North Island hacks.' At Motukarara, lack of experience allied to a little bit of bad luck at the start cost her the race. If she keeps sound she should go a long way, as there is no questioning her speed and she stays on. Arctic Dawn is in the Trial Plate, but though he made a bold showing in the Motukarara Juvenile Slakes he may not be seasoned enough for a hard race over seven furlongs, though from now on he should make rapid progress. The six furlongs Belmont Handicap oil the final day should suit him better. Trench Fight, a winner on the course in January, has won the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap since, and though he will have a solid weight to carry in the Thompson Handicap he represents good class and has the frame to handle weight. Doria has her Hazlett Gold Cup victory as evidence of her ability to run out the mile of the Thompson Handicap. The Iliad —Princess Doreen filly is thickening out nicely and .is much more solid than a casual glance would suggest. It must be remembered,

I however, that Trentham has not been a I lucky course for Doria, states a Christchurch "Star” writer. Don't Forget, a winner over seven furlongs at Motukarara, may have a run in the Thompson before tackling the New Zealand St. Leger. The Myosotis three-year-old was one of the surprises of the spring, winning the Dunedin Guineas, and giving Enrich a tussle in the New Zealand Derby. If he is reasonably weighted Don't Forget will be a distinct possibility for the Thompson, as his Motukarara run should bring him to the peak of hjs form. He is a'smart beginner capable of setting a stiff pace and fighting on> Not Out has run some of his best races at Trentham and in his present form will be hard to hold off in the sprint races. He is honest, a free type of galloper, and usually a smart beginner.

Leading Trotting Sires. Having returned 82 winners Jack Potts is again well ahead in the successful sires list for the current season. The list of winners includes Marlene, who won the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Successful horses by Jack Potts, trained in the Auckland district are Betty Boop, Crucible, Molly Direct. Red Flush. Neutrality, Albertini, and Clay Pot. Second on the list is Grattan Loyal with 44 wins, his most successful representative being Gold Bar. who has won six races. Other good winers by Grattan Loyal include Colonel Grattan, Toceetie, Mankind and Loyal Rey. Wrack, with 37, comes next, and included among his winners are the trotters Bush Laddie, Elete Rey, Lament, Modest Maid. Mohican, Within and Buncrana.

Two-year-old Winners. Up till last weekend there had been ex.actly 50 two-year-old winners in the Dominion this season, and at each of the three meetings on Saturday another juvenile winner was entered on the list. At Rangitikei the maiden race was won by Battledress, a well-bred Posterity—Midinette gelding, hence a halfbrother to the three-year-old Ringcraft, who later in the afternoon finished very solidly into second place behind Circular .Note. At. Banks Peninsula the novice event was taken by Willow Wood, a Cricket Bat —Winsome Hind colt coupling up two of the most successful Stonyhurst lines, those of Elusive and Madowla respectively. At Franklin the two-year-old event was won by Opuatia, a Foxbridge gelding out of the Tea Tray—Taiamai mare Teremai, a sister to Ti Tree, a useful performer some seasons ago. Opuatia is a member of H. E. Gray's team. Horses trained by Gray at Takanini are having a very successful season and he won another race at Franklin with Brazen Bold, who was having his first run since joining Gray's stable.

j To Run in Railway Handicap. Kentucky ran two good races at Taranaki, and he has now filled second place in three successive races. His co-partners should not have to wait long for a further return. Kentucky is to run in the Railway Handicap on I Thursday in preference to the Thompson and he will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins. Doubly Engaged. Four horses claim an engagement in both the Thompson and Railway Handicaps. They are Enrich, Hearth, Gold Dale and Kentucky, Indications are that barring Hearth, they will run in the six furlongs event. I Kindergarten. Kindergarten, with Wiggins up, galloped six furlongs at Trentham yesterday cn the grass in 1.17, doing it well throughout. Kindergarten has done nothing wrong since he was here in January and is in excellent order for; his engagements. Disqualified for Two Years, At a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay district committee last week, disqualification for two years was imposed on A. Katranski, Hastings. No horses are affected by the disqualification, which was imposed under the rule relating to unqualified entries. Siegmund Scratched. Siegmund, who for some time past has been trained by his owner, was very lame after running in the Wairarapa County Cup on Saturday, and it does not look as if he will stand much more racing. He was scratched for all Wellington engagements al .1 p.m. yesterday. RACING FIXTURES I
