FIGHT TO DEATH
“LITTLE GREEK ARMY” FACES FUTURE COUNTRY LULLED INTO FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. PRIOR TO ITALIAN ATTACK. i By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrighti (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) ATHENS, March 9. Revealing that Germany lulled Greece into a false sense of security before the Italian attack. M. Georges Vlachos, a director of the newspaper “Kathimerini,” in an open letter to Hitler, declared: "When the torpedoing of the cruiser Helle demonstrated that Mussolini’s signature was worthless we did not appeal to England but to you. I do not know your answer but from General Metaxas’s letters it was indicated that Germany said we must not mobilise, must remain calm and give no pretext to the Italians, but the Italians declared war on Greece. We therefore turned to Britain, who despite her own difficulties answered the call immediately and unconditionally.” Referring to the concentration of German forces in Bulgaria, M. Vlachos added: “The little Greek army if called on will do in Thrace what it already has done in the Epirus and will light to the death.”
