PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL
ARMY QUEEN TONIGHT AT OPERA HOUSE. MANNEQUIN DISPLAY. One of the outstanding events of the Queen Carnival will be enacted tonight at the Opera House when the local drapers will, present for the first time in Masterton a combined mannequin fashion parade. This should make a special appeal to women as they will have a splendid opportunity of viewing Dame Fashion’s latest creations. There will be a total of thirty-six special showings, with a special commentary 'as the mannequins parade. The second half of the programme will also be new to Masterton. being a bathing beauty contest. These have been very popular in other centres. Capable lady judges have been appointed. A handsome silver cup and bathing costumes have been donated as prizes. Next weekend there will be a galaxy of music by the Trentham Military Band which is considered in musical circles as being one of the finest bands if not the finest in New Zealand today. Full details will be announced later. In connection with the Diggers’ Market the competitions resulted: —First fruit cake: Mrs L. G. Woollett. Second fruit cake: Mrs F. W. Allen. First madeira cake: Mrs A. Wyeth. Second madeira cake: Miss Wilton. Sponge sandwich: Mrs C. E. Jackson. Prizes may be received at the R.S.A. office.
NAVY=NURSING SERVICES ATTRACTIONS DURING WEEK. BOXING AND WRESTLING CONTESTS. The candidature of Miss Barbara Barton (Queen) and Miss Audrey Burling (Princess Royal) will be furthered this week by the star attraction which the committee has arranged. This is the boxing and wrestling events to be held in the Opera House on Wednesday next. The committee has obtained the services of a party of first-class amateur wrestlers from the Featherston Club which produces wrestlers of a high standard. Boxing preliminaries will be supplied by pupils of Hadlow School. Maurice Strickland (New Zealand professional heavyweight champion) will appear in two bouts, one against C. Hanham (New Zealand professional middleweight) and the other against D. Marsh (amateur heavyweight champion). In addition to this splendid programme there will be an auction for the patriotic flag, which the committee hopes, will follow the lead of other flags auctioned in Masterton during the last war and bring in a considerable sum to the patriotic fund.
