GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. GOOD SEASONAL DEMAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 7. Prices in the grain and produce markets, particularly for small seeds, appear to have settled down in the meantime though there is no real strength in the market. At present a normally good seasonal demand exis.ts for autumn sowing bu£ there is no buying for export or against possibility of export later on. It is probable that the present situation will remain more or less unchaned till after Easter, from when on the outlook is uncertain as it will depend entirely on what shipping is available for general cargoes. A steady flow of white clover is maintained. Samples vary widely and yields have also shown marked differences. The prices for good seed is from.ls. 9d. to 2s. per lb., but sales down to as low as lOd. for inferior quality have been made. Ryegrass remains steady at about 3s. 6d. to 4s. for both perennial and Italian. The southern crop is beginning to come in and promises well. The indicated price for southern seed which is ss. f.o.b. is about a shilling below the local price. It is likely that when the southern seed comes on to the market in any quantity the local market will suffer. Not a great amount of cocksfoot is coming in from Banks Peninsula and the values remain at up to Is. for good seed.
Chaff has been in slightlyibetter de-
mand and the price is now £3 155., on trucks. Peas are slightly weaker because of the increasingly obscure shipping position. Beset No. 1 partridge are worth up to 6s. The recent gale has done a good deal of damage to. peas and many growers have found that large portions of their crop have disappeared.
