NEW ORDER

EXCLUDING BRITISH & U.S.A. BUSINESS CHANGES ON THE CONTINENT. WARNING BY "THE TIMES.” - LONDON. March 6. "The Times's” monthly trade review warns against the general attitude of under-estimating the new order in Europe. Its aim. it states, is to increase the German war economic potential and effect a lasting exclusion of British and American business from the Continent. Intra-Continental transactions from Norway to Yugoslavia must be effected through Berlin, giving Germany a working knowledge of the entire structure of European finance, business and foreign trade, thus establishing an all-European economic Gestapo. Whereas the close collaboration of the western iron' industries is mainly intended to increase Hitler's war economic potential, the building of enormous power stations in Scandinavia and the adaptation of the western textile industry to German textile fibres is clearly aimed at the main groups of British exports to Europe, sucli as coal, textiles and machinery, “The Times” states. Most of the changes have been in iron manufacture, in which the. Belgian, German and Lorraine works are closely connected. The economy of western Europe is unlikely for some time to resist this development. On the contrary the evidence points to an increased probability that the policy of penetration will be extended systematically in western Europe in an attempt to change its intrinsic structure and co-ordination. A changed European economy with re-established world trade and a division of labour presents one of the crucial problems of post-war construction.
