STATE THEATRE. TONIGHT (Friday). Saturday and Monday: One of the grandest comedies of this or any year is promised in Elsa Maxwell’s "PUBLIC DEB. NO. 1," the 20th Century-Fox picture which comes lonight to the State Theatre. The hilarious story of a spoiled heiress who turns “Leftist" was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck with a carefully selected cast of favourites headed by George Murphy and Brenda Joyce. Others seen in the new comedy hit include Elsa Maxwell, Mischa Auer, Charlie Ruggles, Ralph Bellamy, Maxie Rosenbloom, Berton Churchill and Franklin Pangborn. The supports are brilliant and include “CHRISTMAS UNDER FIRE." a thrilling film with commentary by Quentin Reynolds, showing how the people at Home celebrated their Yuletidc. Also screening on this outstanding programme is the latest issue of the March of Time —“Gateways to Panama."

Monday: "CHARLIE McCarthy, detective," the season’s happy hit with Charlie as a unit of the law and Mortimer a fugitive from Scotland Yard. “I'M NOBODY’S SWEETHEART NOW," featuring Dennis 'O'Keefe, Constance Moore, Helen Parrish and Lewis Howard in an outstanding picture. TUESDAY. Wednesday, Thursday: “ALF'S BUTTON AFLOAT,” featuring Flannagan and Allen and “The Crazy Gang." One of the funniest laugh teams to come to the screen. Also “KENTUCKY MOONSHINE," starring the Ritz Brothers, in a screaming picture. FRIDAY, Saturday, and Monday next: "CHEER BOYS CHEER," featuring Nova Pilbeam and Edmund Gwenn in an excellent comedy. “TRAITOR SPY,” starring Bruce Cabot and Tamaca Desni in a powerful spy drama. REGENT THEATRE. TONIGHT, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and, Thursday: Jeanette MacDonald and . Nelson ■ Eddy in a brilliant triumph, “NEW MOON." There are many haunting melodies in this outstanding production which depicts days of wild adventure and nights of glorious romance. It is a picture which patrons cannot afford to miss. It provides a triumph for both artists, and is one of the most tuneful presentations ever brought to the screen. The supports include the latest news reels. FRIDAY NEXT, March 14: “I TAKE THIS WOMAN." A new and interesting romantic team makes the screen in “I TAKE THIS WOMAN." The combination comprises Spencei Tracy and’ Hedy Lamarr, and the teaming of these two -distinct personalities is successful, because of a story which is ideal for such blending of talent.
