CARTERTON

SOLDIERS ON LEAVE i ' ENJOYABLE SOCIAL GATHERING. (“Times-Age" Special.) About seventy members of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association last night tendered a social gathering to nine soldiers who are on leave. Proceedings were opened by the singing of the National Anthem. The chairman, Mr A. T. Murray, extended a hearty welcome to the soldiers, particularly Bombadier R. Brown, Sergeant Martin, Privates' N. Jensen, N. Spooner, Webster, Tomlin. Bain, Bennett and Gunner Dudar. He also welcomed home . Sergeant Baker, Corporal Liddington and Privates H. Humphries and Kennedy and Messrs H. Patterson and Bennett, visitors 10 Carterton, and members of the 1914-18 war army.

Apologies for absence were received from Staff Nurse Jean Bond, Privates R. McCann, J. Oberg, A. Freer, Gibb Johnston, the branch secretary, Mr G. Rabbits and Messrs P. A. Cole and Howard E. Jackson.

The chairman referred to the illness of their secretary, Mr G. Rabbits and a vote of sympathy was passed to him. A splendid programme of vocal, musical and other items was rendered. Items were given by Messrs A. Kay, Ardrey, Golding, H. T. Ray, B. H. Johns and Private N. Spooner. Community singing was led by Mr A. Kay, and all the items were well received and encored. Mr P. L. Darke played the accompaniments. Mr Murray thanked those who had contributed to the musical programme. Supper was provided. The chairman proposed the health of “The Men on Leave.” He was sure they would play the game both on and off the field of battle. He hoped that they would be blessed with good luck and have a safe return to New Zealand covered with honour and glory. Sergeant Martin and Bombadier Brown returned thanks on behalf of their comrades. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” terminated a very enjoyable gathering. HEART TO HEART APPEAL CARTERTON DISTRICT RETURNS. BOWLING PRAGNELL CUP. Another game for the Pragnell Cup was played on the Carterton green last evening when Larsen from the Martinborough Club met the holder Sorensen. After a very interesting game Sorensen stalled off the twelfth successive challenge, winning by 6 points. On the 18th end the scores were 13 each and in the last 3 heads the holder scored 6 points. Church Services. A Church of England service will be held at Parkvale on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Football Club. A meeting of the Carterton Football Club will be held on Wednesday evening at the Fire Brigade Hall for the purpose of revising the rules of the club. A full attendance of members is requested. . ( Personal Items. Mrs W. Bridge, who has been an inmate of Masterton Hospital and who recently underwent an operation, returned to her home today. Mr and Mrs W. Campin. of Waiha- ’» keke, left Carterton this morning en '■ route for Auckland where they will " spent a holiday. Mr. R. W. Nunn, who has been an inmate of Masterton Hospital, has returned to Carterton. Horses for Foxton Camp. Troopers L. Renal! and B. Speedy arrived, in Carterton yesterday to take charge of horses that had been arranged for in the Wairarapa for transport, to the Mounted Rifle Brigades Camp at Foxton. Soldiers to be Entertained. A number of soldiers will be officially entertained in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, tonight, when it is hoped their will be a large attendance of residents. Dancing will commence at 8 o'clock and during the evening the Mayor will address the soldiers. Good music and supper will be provided. The prices of admission arc fixed al men 2s 6d. ladies Is 6d (or Is and a basket). Tennis Match. In a match against Kahutara, the Carrington Park Tennis Club. Carterton. lost by 21 games to 11.
