A Comfortable Win. The win favourite, Night Pilot, scored a comfortable win in the Taranaki Centennial Cup yesterday. He was kept in a handy position throughout, while Olympus and Cheval de Volee took turns in the lead and, nearing the home turn, he moved up to a position from where he could assume command as soon as the field entered the straight. He got to the front in a few strides and over the last furlong the issue was never in doubt, Night Pilot winning by two lengths from Sir Crusoe, who trailed the leaders for a mile but then lost his position. He came on again in the straight and comfortably beat the others, without looking likely to overhaul the winner. Piastre, who was last till the three furlongs mark, finished with his usual solid run from the back, just beating Friesland, who was also doing his best work at the close. Cheval de Volee was fifth. Gay Fox sixth, and Dark Eagle seventh. A Good Three-year-old. Even allowing for the fact that he secured a lucky run on the rails when . the leaders swung wide at the turn, the three-year-old Night Pilot was responsible for a nice performance when he won the Dynes Fulton Memorial Handicap at Pukekohe. It might not : have been easy for him if he had not secured such a fine run, but he would ■ have been unlucky to lose, and more is sure to be heard of him in the near future. The impression left by Night . Pilot is that he will stay well, and this will not be surprising in view of his ; pedigree. He is a good-looking bay colt by Night Raid from Lytup, by Clarenceux from Flame, by Phaeton ! from Catherine Wheel, by Maxim. Night Pilot is thus closely related to . Phar Lap, who was by Night Raid I from Entreaty, by Winkle from Prayer ! Wheel, by Pilgrim's Progress from Catherine Wheel.
