EX-KING ALFONSO
■ DEATH REPORTED IN ROME MOURNING IN SPAIN. s THREE DAYS’ OBSERVANCE ORDERED. The death has occurred in Rome of ex-King Alfonso, aged 54 years, states the 8.8. C. Spain has ordered a threeday national mourning. Ex-Queen Victoria Eugenie and the sons of the ex-King were at the bedside till the end. The late ex-King Alfonso, who was born a king, married Princess Henry of Battenberg’s daughter, Princess Ena, in 1906. Endowed with energy and courage, he dominated his kingdom, but on the proclamation of a Republican Government, King Alfonso suspended the exercise of the Royal Power, and quitted Spain on April 15, 1931, followed by the Queen and his family. King Alfonso was crowned 7 King of Spain in 1902 when 16 years of age. He survived several attempts on his life, one of which occurred at his wedding in 1906 when bombs were thrown as the Royal couple left the church.
