Japanese Compromise Proposals
VICHY MAKING REPLY
TOKIO INSISTENCE ON ACCEPTANCE
A message from Vichy, states the 8.8. C., reports that Marshal Petain’s Cabinet has decided on its reply io the Japanese compromise proposals for a settlement of the dispute between French Indo-China and Thailand. Marshal Petain will make, a broadcast speech today. No indication is given of the nature of the reply. . , „ T 1 , . , , It is reported that the situation in the Far East has reached / a critical stage. The Japanese have asked for a clear yes or no answer to their proposals, but no communication has so far been received from the Vichy Government nor any explanation gi\en for the delay. Pieports that Japan sent an ultimatum to IndoChina are denied in Tokio, though it is admitted that Japan insists on France accepting the proposals. There are unconfirmed reports of Japanese military preparations in >South China. A report from lokio states that Mi. Matsuoka (Japanese' Foreign Secretary) was received in audience, by 7 the Emperor of Japan.
