MARRIED RESERVISTS
REGULATIONS CLEAR. AN INTERESTING SITUATION. 'By Telegraph—Press Association..! DUNEDIN. February 27. Judged from a case heard recently by the Dunedin Armed Forces Appeal Board there appears to be some confusion as to the position of a single man who marries after May 1. 1940, a widow with a family. The regulations make it clear that, for the purpose of the ballot, such reservist is classed as a single man unless a child is born before the ballot is announced. In a case before the board, appellant married a widow with five children shortly after he had been advised that he.had been drawn in a ballot. He was under the impression that he would be classed as a married man. but the board, in its decision, made it clear that under the regulations he is a single man. Sections dealing with a man with step-children or adopted children states that the term "child" includes: ftp A child legally adopted by a reservist before May 1. 1940. if the reservist was married before that date, but includes no other adopted children; <b» a child of the wife of a reservist if the reservist married the. mother of that child before May 1.1 1940, but includes no other step-child-; ren. ;
From the military point of view, however, the position is somewhat different. as since October, 1939. the registration department has been advised not to send to camp men with more than two children under Hi years of age. The term children is regarded by the army authorities as dependents, whether they are a man's own children or step-children. It is expected that the whole matter will be clarified at an early date.
