Betting for Riders
(BY “THE GRAFTER.";
The Rules of Racing make it quite clear that unlicensed persons can be dealt with by the stewards, but there is a popular opinion that backers do not offend against the rules by making bets for jockeys. According to rule 119, “any person betting with or for any jockey or rider may be fined or disqualified or warned off the course.” This rule appears to have been framed (says the “Sydney Telegraph”) specially to fit the case of the offending backer without bringing in the jockey who may be dealt with under other rules.
The backer, who may invest a special sum for the purpose of making a present to a jockey, is permitted to do so. provided he has the consent of the owner of the horse to be ridden by the jockey. Permission is given by rule 114. clause (b), which says that q jockey shall be fined, suspended from riding, or disqualified if he accepts any pecuniary or other gift or other consideration in connection with any race in which he shall ride, other than from the owner of the horse he shall ride in such race, without the consent of such owner. Racing men of the old school assert that this rule is too elastic, and claim that all betting for jockeys should be done directly by the stable. This was compulsory in the old V.R.C. Rules of Racing, it being laid down that "a jockey may be suspended. fined, or disqualified if he shall have any interest directly or indirectly in any wager on any race, excepting a wager made for him by the owner of the horse he is riding and on such horse.” x Royal Lancer. Macdonald. and is by Solicitor-General from Capercailzie. She has won three races this season. She requires, however, particular attention on the tracks and as H. and A.
