WOODEN PLANES
FAVOURABLE REPORTS RECEIVED TESTS IN AUSTRALIA. In collaboration with the Division of Forest Products of the Australian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the New South Wales Division of Wood Technology lias carried out a total of 44.000 mechanical tests with timbers since the war began, to determine their suitability for use in aircraft construction. The Standards Association of Australia recently issued specifications for three Australian timbers —Queensland maple, hoop pine, and alpine ash. Should it be necessary to construct timber aircraft the necessary information is available to designers for some Australian timbers. In suppore of the manufacturing of timber aircraft. Mr. M. Gosper. Director of the Timber Development Association. said recently that, plywood machines are cheap to produce. Production can be speeded up. and output can be greatly increased. Plywood aircraft have as great strength as any metal type, and they are more durable.
