i WAIRARAPA CUP MEETING I — EVENTS LAST NIGHT. I ] ARMY CANDIDATE CAMPAIGN. There was an exceptionally large attendance in the Municipal Hall last evening when the Wairarapa Cup meeting was held in aid of the Army Queen candidate. The winners were: Interhouse Flutter. Miss Jean Henderson; Papakura Push. Miss Edna McGovern: Cookhouse Steaks, Miss Pat Jameson; Knapsack Handicap. Miss I Corleti; Holdsworth Highweight, Miss Nola Hargood; Route March. Miss D. Brown; Retailer's Nightmare. Miss Waireka Nini: Wairarapa Cup. Miss Waireka Nini. The Army Queen Committee desires to thank the staffs of the combined banks in Masterton for their services in making the night the overwhelming success it undoubtedly was. Shop Day Tomorrow. The weekly bring and buy .shop day will be held at the Army Queen Depot tomorrow. Supporters are urgently requested to send in donations of meat, sweets, cake, vegetables, etc. Concert on Saturday. On Saturday night the Si Andrew Society will present a concert In the Opera House in aid of the Army Queen funds. A most attractive programme has been arranged, a special feature of which will be items by the ladies' choir. On Saturday night also the Army Queen’s concert and dance party will visit. Tinui and will stage a grand I carnival evening in the Tinui Hall. I Judging by the support received at j other places it is hoped that the fundsi will be considerably increased through the support of Tinui residents. NAVY-NURSING QUEEN 1 MORE INTENSE ACTIVITY. j PADDY'S MARKET TOMORROW j The campaign for Miss Barbara Bar-] ton < Navy-Nursing Services Queen) and. Miss Audrey Burling 'Princess Royali. according (n the latest communiques. is entering a phase of greater and more intense activity. Very successful results were obtained as the result of the "action" at the Showgrounds by naval forces backed by the nursing service. The schools’ main attack will take place tomorrow at a Paddy’s Market in the Municipal Hall. ’lnis will be combined with the Navy League’s "White Elephant" sale. Tire following list includes some of the articles which will be for disposal at the "White Elephant" sale: Fur coat, riding boots, sheepskin rug. evening frocks, coats, mats, shoes, electric fan. books, magazines, wringers, crockery, lire irons, gramophone records, ornaments, side saddle, etc.
On Saturday the swimming carnival at the Dixon Street baths should attract a record crowd to see the "big guns” in action through the water. There will be a schools’ wheelbarrow derby and swimming sports next week. AIR FORCE CAMPAIGN MANY SUCCESSFUL ACTIVITIES At the Showgrounds yesterday a merry band of Air Force Queen supporters worked indefatigably in their efforts to place the Air Force Queen. Miss Jose Hosking, at the top of the poll. The committee desires to express thanks to all who so kindly gave their support. Special thanks are due to Mr H. B Thomas for his generous donation, winch was instrumental in raising the campaign funds considerably Concert at Opera House. The concert at the Opera House last night was a success in every way. The Huimai Maori Partj* was in excellent form and gave a performance which would well merit a repeat performance. A party of members of the Wellington Society of Magicians, under the leadership of Mr G.
