February 19 The Senate debate was resumed Senator Connally pleaded fur national unity in support of the British aid bill He said: "The democracies must al! hang together or they may hang separately This is a death StruggleDemocracy against ruthless tyranny. Our material interest, our world prestige and our domestic tranquillity require that we meet this titanic issue with a single voice and a single purpose. America must play her part, and must not fail" Senator Bennett Clark, the first opposition speaker in the debate, said the British Aid Bill would weaken the American defences and gamble the whole national safety upon one card a complete British victory. "I am entirety unwilling to commit the United Stales’ defence to the British Empire. ' he said. ' 1 do not agree that the .American people should underwrite the expenses of the British Empire from Hong Kong to Labrador. "1 arn unwilling that the American taxpayers already ha rd pressed, should be called upon to adopt measures' which Canada. New Zealand and Australia have m,t yet been called upon to enact."
