OPERATIONS FOR PAST MONTH.
REPORTS OF OFFICIALS. At the monthly meeting of me Mas--1 terton Borough Council held in MasI tenon last night the following reports { setting out work carried out in the ! borough during the past month were | adopted:— Work in the Park. j The acting park custodian. Mr F. H. | Knowles, reported as follows: —"The work at the Park for the past month has been carried out satisfactorily. The cleaning of the lily pond and surroundings at the far end of the lake was completed. The spell of rough wea- ? ther experienced during the month ' has caused a considerable amount oi work in keeping the Park clean. Band Activities. 5 Mr B. Rickards, secretary of the Municipal Band, reported that 7 band ;; practices were held during the past : I momn. Seasonable items were ren- ; dered at the Post Office corner early Jin the morning of January 1. Sexton's Report. "During the month the usual main- . tenance work has been carried out,' . stated the sexton. Mr C. S. Morris There were 11 burials. ' Mawley Motor Camp. J Mr T. Bulloch. Custodian of MawI ley Motor Camp Park, stated that 43C J cars had visited the camp during 1940: '; 54 cars were at the camp during Jan- : I uary. Ladies’ Rest Rooms. Mrs G. L. Nissen, matron of the ■ Ladies’ Rest Rooms, reported that 112 visitors, 250 country and 100 townspeople, a total of 4G2, visited the rooms. The committee room was used on two occasions. Abattoir Report. I To date fees are £739 14s 5d lower than lasi year. Killing fees are £lB3 10s 8d lower for January.' slates the abattoir report. Seventy-four cow's 33 heifers, G 1 bullocks, 1G calves. 252 ewes. 430 wethers, 190 lambs and 2GG pigs were slaughtered last month. Four sheep and 1 pig were condemned. The I work had been carried out in a very satisfactory manner. Gas Manager’s Report. The gas manager. Mr J. Y. Douglas, reported as follows: "The works are running very satisfactorily at the present time. The rfas made cor- ! rected N.T.P. was 3.155,200 cubic feet. I being a decrease of 281.200 cubic feet i or 8.1 per cent over the correspond- ! ing period of last year; 986 bags of I coke were sold and 2634 gallons of tar | disposed of. C. & A. Baths. | "This month visitors from several I places have been at the baths. On 1 one occasion children from the Whatman Home called and most of them ■ qualified for distance certificates. On j January 29 Wellington Girl Guides ! also used the baths. They also swam ■' for distance certificates." stated Mrs J. Brcnkley. custodian of the C. & A. ! Baths. Another Royal Life Saving j examination was held during the , month, a good percentage being suc- : cessful. The squad was examined by i Miss O. Brcnkley. Health Inspector's Report. Mr T. A. Russell, Borough Health Inspector, reported as follow: "No case of infectious disease was notified during January or to date this month. Twelve plumbing and drainage permit-- were issued and the usual testing and inspection work carried out. The requisitions served were as follows: Plumbing and drainage repairs, 6; cut back fence, 3; remove rubbish. 4; clear creeks, 3; clear weeds, Borough Engineer's Report. The Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mtibson, reported on engineering activities during the past month as follows: "Streets: Macara Street formation and metalling—from Bannister Street to Worksop Road —is proceeding. and will be consolidated this week. The kerbing of the Rue Block cul-de-sac has been completed, also path formation. The road formation will be started later this week. The’ metalling rind consolidating of Beetham Street and Hosking Place lias been completed, and both streets have been tar-sealed. The flood in the Waingaw;., last Wednesday, was the highest for some considerable lime and did a certain amount of damage to the groynes above the intake, Damage was also done to the river-protection wor'c tit the Johnstone Street sewage I farm, due io Mr D. Donald's tem])orary work carrying away and thus allowing the river to cut away in behind our work. Building permits; During tile month three permits were issued, having an estimated value of! £90(1 18s Gd."
