HOME GUARD LARGE ATTENDANCE AT PARADE. C'Times-Age” Special.) There was a very large attendance of the Home Guards at the parade on the Showgrounds, Carterton, last evening. Further recruits entered the ranks last evening, and the corps has now reached considerably over the lOC mark. RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A committee meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Red Cross Society , was held in the Borough Offices on ] Monday. There were present: Mes- i dames Beaven, Every, Sorenson. Knut-: son, Stubbs. Udy, and Fairbrother. Apologies for absence-were received! from Mesdames Cole and Chennells. I The treasurer reported: Monies received since the last meeting: Subscriptions. £3 15s; Carterton Scout Com-1 mittee, £1; Clareville School. £l. Ex-| penditure: Levy to Masterton Centre, | £ll 17s; relief of distress in district, £5. The secretary was instructed to no-, tify members in regard to outstanding! subscriptions. The delegates nominated to attend a , V.A.D. Conference ig, Masterton on ■ Tuesday were Mesdames Chennells i and Stubbs and the secretary. Mr Taverner reported in regard to i the expenditure of £5 from the T. G. I McCarthy Trust Fund for distress in! the district. On the motion of Mrs Fairbrother it j was decided to obtain all necessary in-! formation in connection with the ■ forming of a Red Cross Transport I Corp in Carterton. The secretary was instructed to advise headquarters of the return of a i soldier from Egypt who was totally] blind. A donation of £2 2s was made to the] Wellington Returned Soldiers' Hoste! j for a frigidaire which is urgently need- i ed in the institution. SWIMMING CARTERTON CLUB'S MEETING. There should be a very large at- 1 tendance at the sports meeting and Paddy's Market on Saturday next in : aid of the patriotic funds. It is hoped by the effort to raise most of the funds 1 required for the district's share of the] £1.000.000 appeal. The ladies' com-' mittees in various districts have been working hard and besides articles of!| clothing that have been made they]] have received many valuable gifts]; among them being Egyptian tapestry,l; bags of flour, sugar, cakes, etc . all of which will be rallied on Saturday Quantities of prime farm grown and . killed meat will be obtainable and!; housewives will be well catered f<-r in , this respect. Ice cream, sww.s and i soft drinks will also be obtainable ] The Carterton Fire Brigade will be] in charge of a side show where inter-1 esting exhibits will be seen for a mod- ’ est charge. .Among them will be up freak horse, three-legged lamb. a man- 1 ' eating shark, and the great Indian rop 1 ; trick. Music '.‘.ill be supplied by the 1 Pipe Band and Carterton Silver Band. 1 .Among the special items will be an in- ■ terhouse girls' display, tug-of-war. 1 dancing on the green, and National ! dancing.
