REGENT THEATRE
‘•SUSAN AND GOD." Rachel Crothers' stage hit, •'Susan j and God," which ran for eight months i on Broadway before being taken “on j the road,” emerges as an even greater I hit in its screen form. The new pic- i ture, co-starring Joan Crawford and} Fredric March, will be shown to-1 night. As the rattle-brained and I self-centred Susan who adopts a new; social movement as a fad and tries to j convert all her friends to it. only to see them antagonised and her own , life develop into a seemingly hopeless tangle, Joan Crawford attains a dramatic assurance which her most devoted fans could have scarcely envisioned. Her performance gives her a new niche in filmdom. And as the in-j ebriate husband, Barrie, who wins the, final victory with himself and Susan. ' Fredric March makes a brilliant re- i turn to the screen which he temporar- j ily deserted to star on the stage. I Throughout' Director George Cukor i has succeeded in eliciting sparkling performances. Ruth Hussey as Charlotte. friend of the family in love with Barrie, is warm and understanding. Rita Hayworth is appealingly glamorous as the young actress, Leonora, in love with actor John Carroll but married to businessman Nigel Bruce. Rita Quigley as Blossom, neglected daugh- j ter of Susan and Barrie; Rose Hobart, as Irene, hostess at the house party j where the action gets under way: Bruce Cabot as sportsman Alike j O'Hara, in love with Irene; and Con- ■ stance Collier as Lady WigstafT, lea- j der of the movement, all give ■'lift" to j Hunt Stromberg’s memorable produc- I tion. The brilliant screen play by i Anita Loos captures the entire spirit I of the play while providing a much j more complete picture of the char- , actors involved.
