HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR Fruit, Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK FLOWER GARDEN. Take the chrysanthemum buds as they appear and remove surplus growths. When the layers of border carnations are well rooted they may be severed from the plants. Madonna lilies should be planted as soon as possible before autumn starts. Gazanias may be propagated by cuttings of the young growths inserted in sandy soil. Continue planting bulbs for spring flowering: do not plant narcissi bulbs too shallow. Sow seeds of anemone and ranunculus in prepared beds; shade from bright sunlight. Insert cuttings of bedding plants required for next season. VEGETABLE GARDEN. Dig over all vacant plots and. if net required for present sowings or plantings, sow down with green crops for digging-in later. Earth-up leeks and celery as they require it; do this while both soil and plants are dry. If peas art attacked by mildew, dust with sulphur or spray with one of the sulphur preparations. Sow prickly spinach now, and again in a month. When the land is in a moist condition, push on with the sowing of seed for winter crops, Plant out cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and other greens for winter supplies. Make another sowing of cabbage and cauliflower. FRUIT GARDEN. Apples may need another spraying for codliti moth. Pick up all fallen fruits and those which are not fit for use should be destroyed. Tip layer loganberries where an increase of stock is required. Ripening melons should have a piece of board placed under each fruit to keep the fruits from the ground.
