’ NEW COMPETITION PLANNED 1 rj “CAMOUFLAGED BOMBS." 1 j J DISPLAY IN W.F.C.A. WINDOW. The central Queen Carnival Committee has formulated plans for a Camouflaged Bomb" competition to start on February 17 or 18. In a W.F.C.A. window there will be one “bomb” for each queen and one for the schools. These bomb shapes will have placed on them by artists designs which are then to be covered and decorated by coupons obtainable from "John Bull Calls,’’ Perry Street at Id. 3d, Cd and Is. When completed the bombs will be judged as follow: —45 points for design. 35 points for value, 20 points for general finish. In addition to the actual money collected by the coupons prizes will be given to competition winners:— First 2000 votes, second 1000. and third 500. Decorations on the bombs and the number of canvassers available arc unlimited, but the whole object of the competition is to collect the very sweet "small" money instead of copper trails. RED, WHITE & BLUE NAVY-NURSING SERVICES QUEEN. New Zealand’s first lino of defence is the navy and what is there of more important in a war than the nursing service? The cause of the Navy-Nurs-ing Services Queen will be further advanced with a dance tonight in. the Masonic Hall, arranged by the St. John Ambulance Brigade and supporters are assured of a good time with Jack Barnes’s Rhythm Boys’ Orchestra. The schools have now "put to sea” and are conducting a ■"sweep" of the carnival area to add their quota to the red.white and blue cause. Other activities in furtherance of the campaign for Miss Barbara Barton (Queen) and the Princess Royal, Miss Audrey Burling, will bo announced shortly. VICTORY FLAG. AND ACTIVE SERVICE SCROLL. Members of the Red Cross Hospital Group have presented the Navy-Nurs-ing Services Queen Committee with a large Union Jack. The flag which will be auctioned during the carnival has been handsewn and the material used is of the highesj quality Accompanying the flag is an active service scroll of the best durable parchment and it is hoped to obtain the names of all on active service from the Wairarapa district as a permanent record. No one should miss the opportunity of having the name of their soldier father, husband. son, daughter, brother, sister or friend inscribed on this document. To carry out the work of designing the scroll and inscribing the soldiers" names thereon, the Navy-Nursing Services Queen Committee has been most fortunate in securing the services of Mr S. B. Maclennan. A.R.C.A.. N.R.D. The flag will be displayed in Messrs Hugo and Shearer’s window. Queen Street. Those interested in having names inscribed on the scroll may obtain further particulars by ringing 1768, Navy-Nursing Services Queen depot, Perry Street. Names will be insreibed for a minimum charge. ARMY CAMPAIGN PROCESSION AND DANCE TONIGHT. "RACE MEETING" NEXT WEDNESDAY. Tonight, weather permitting, a monster procession of Interhouse Girls and Territorials headed by the St. Andrew Society Pipe Band and Masterton Municipal Band will leave Wagg’s corner .it 745 o’clock. An unusual feature of the parade will be iht special float carrying modern warfare equipment Following the procession iwet or fine) the gala mterhouse dance will be held in the Municipal Hall at 5 o’clock. There will be novelty dances, an extra special supjwr and a new dance band to give al! patrons a wonderful evening’s dancing. Perhaps the most unusual attraction during the carnival will be th-’ Army Queen Committee’s Wairarapa Cup race meeting which will be held in | the Municipal Hail on Wednesday I night next. The first race will start promptly at 8 o’clock. Lathes nominated by well-known business men in the town trill take the place of horses and many bright names and colours will be carried by the competition.
