SUBVERSION CHARGES
TWO MEN ON TRIAL. NO EVIDENCE FOR THE DEFENCE. <By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. The hearing of subversion charges against Harold Alexander Ostler and Travers Burnell Christopher Christie was begun in the Supreme Court today before Mr. Justice Northcroft. The two accused elected to conduct their own cases. When the Court adjourned at 4.50 p.m.. all the evidence for the Crown had been heard. Proceedings will be continued tomorrow. Accused intimated that they would not give or call evidence for the defence. Accused were jointly charged that they published a subversive statement, that they attempted to publish a subversive statement, that they had in their possession certain copies of the “People’s Voice." with a view to facilitating the publication of a subversive statement, and that they had in their possession typewriters, paper and with a view to facilitating the of a subversive statement. The date of the alleged offences was stated as August 8. Accused pleaded not guilty.
