WOMEN’S INSTITUTE • 1 MONTHLY’ MEETING OF MEMBERS. I ("Times-Age" Special. l j Mrs Kent presided over a good attendance of members al the monthly meeting of the Pongaroa Women's In- . stitute. Arrangements were finalised for the display of work at the autumn , show and Mrs Jensen and Misses E. and I. Clark agreed to take charge of the articles. Nominations of officers for the ensuing year were taken. Wool from headquarters was received and distributed for knitting into pullovers, scarves, and balaclavas A presentation of a dainty cup. saucer and plate from the institute was made to Mrs Stewart, who htis recently left the district. There was an excellent response to the monthly competition (one or more thrift articles for the display of work*, the winners being Mcsdames Davies (first* and E. S. Berry (second*, each with a woo! mat. In the cookery section (shortbread), the winners were I Miss Kent and Mrs Kent I A wall competition “Articles found in the kitchen.” was won by Mrs Gwen. Afternoon tea was served by lhe I hostesses. Mcsdames Norris. Nicholson. I R. Scott and F. Berry, after which the meeting dosed with the singing of the [ National Anthem. STREET STALL — PATRIOTIC EFFORT. The recent street stall, held under the auspices of the Akitio Women’s Patriotic Society, in aid of the soldiers’ parcels funds, was an outstanding success. As the township was at its busiest, owing to a big sale day. r i plentiful quantity of produce, meat, preserves and gookery found ready sale. The stall resulted in a profit of over £3l. This amount wi.l be considerably augmenteo when all lhe competitions are finalised Winners of the ; latter were: —Satin cushion (made and I donated by Mrs S. Eunson*. J Polglase. Range Road; book-ends (donated by Mrs Bolton*. Gus Mooch: rooster (donated by Mrs P. Mason). Patty Alpin; box of home-made tofleo (donated, by Miss E. Kent). G. W Shea rd. Personals. Miss Beryl Slone, of Konini. is staying with her grandparents, Mr and Mrs; C. Hodder. Mrs P. H. Donovan has returned from a visit to Wellington. Private T. O'Brien, of Waiov.ru military camp, is home on sick leave. j
