I The monthly meeting of the Alfredj ion Women's Institute was opened ' with the Ode. the singing of “God Dc- ! fend New Zealand" and the prayer for jpeace. j Owing to lhe unavoidable absence jof the president. Mrs Hull took lhe j chair. i Two letters were received from soldiers overseas —Privates A. Brannigan and H. Dearth, thanking the Institute for the parcels they had reMrs E. Hutchings and Miss J. Algie i were appointed delegates to attend the j annual conference of Institutes. The winners in the competitions were:—Best bloom: Mrs Dickens 1. Mrs Hutchings 2, Mrs E. McLean 3. Baby's garment, hand sewn: Mrs E. McLean 1. Mrs Seymour and Mrs Walker (equal) 2. .Mrs McKay 3. Machine hem: Miss S. Napier 1. Mrs Dickens 2 and 3. Each member brought along a j garment for this competition. The I garments are to be sent to refugees. • Cold sweet dish: Mrs McKay 1 Mrs E. ( McLean 2. Mrs Weston 3. | Mrs K. Groves was welcomeci as a i new member. j Mrs Walker, of the Collingwood InI stitute. gave a donation to the Institute I funds. j Nominations for the committee for i the ensuing year were received. The election will take place at the March meeting. The hostesses were Mrs Algie and Misses Z. Smith and G. Napier. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. PATRIOTIC SOCIETY — SUCCESSFUL CARD PARTY. The winners of the games at lhe card party held on Saturday night and conducted by the Patriotic Society were: —Ladies: Mrs S. Edmonds 1. Mrs Williams 2. Men: Mr B, Rolls 1. Mr V. Payne 2. A tin of honey donated by Mr Percy was won by Mr B. Rolls. It realised £1 10s. A cabbage given by Mrs E. Hutchings brought 7s. Flowers donated by Mr.F. Johnson were bought for 5s 6d. The competition for a cushion donated by Mr B. Galbraith, and also a tin of biscuits given by Miss M. Heckler, will be finalised at the next card evening. The hostesses were Mrs J. Hartley, F. McLean and Mrs E. McLean. The takings during the evening amounted to £8 0s Gd. Personal. Miss Doyle, of the local Post Office, has left on her annual leave? Home Guard Parade. There was a v n ry good attendance at the parade of the Home Guard last evening. The next parade will take place on Saturday evening.
