Four men, three of whom.are underi stood to have come from Australia, arj rived at Ashburton hist night after a ‘ hurried trip from Wellington. They ' travelled by a specially chartered aero- ' plane io Blenheim, then by bus to the '■ . utskirls of Christchurch and then by j taxi to Ashburton. i They wore being sought by the poli ice on charges of obtaining moriey by Haise pretences and in due course were j arrested. They appeared before a special sitting of the Magistrate's Court in AshI burton at about i I 30 last night, and i were remanded to appear tn Christ- > church. They appeared here, when they I were remanded to appear in Wellinjo ' ton next Wednesday, Two of ilie men Edward Hughes. • alias Wilson, salesman aged 27. and i William Birch, alias It. McGlynn, sales- • man and .showman, also aged 27 were I charged with obtaining £55 from j Xenia Grant by falsely representing i that two zircons were diamonds.
