It is authoritatively stated that pre- : liminary discussion have been held I between the British Embassy and the ; State Department on the question of ! establishing direct diplomatic relations ! between New Zealand and the United ; States, similar to the exchange of the j Australian Minister to Washington. Mr. Casey, and the United States Minister to Canberra, Mr. Gauss. It is believed that an early decision can be expected. The British Embassy is the normal means of communication between the two Governments, in the absence of direct contacts. The aim of the United States and New Zealand in the creation of closer relations would be to strength- ! en their mUtual positions in the Pacific. I where the interest of both are increas- ■ ing large as democracies and propon- ! ents of law and order. New Zealand is i the last Dominion lacking direct relai lions with Washington.
