LATE MR E. HALE
4 MAN OF MANY ACTIVITIES. ■ RECORD OF COMMUNITY SERVICE , The late Mr. E. Hale, whose death was reported in the Wairarapa “Times--Age" on Saturday was born in Nelson ! in 1863. and was the second son of the I late John Hale, who arrived in Nelson I in the sailing ship Lady Alice on Jan- . uary 15, 1859. He was brought up in the profession of the Nursery trade by his ! father and came to Masterton, 47 years f ago. where ho commenced and eslab-1 lished the well-known nursery at To ; Ore Ore Road. Lansdowne, the reputa- j tation of which is widely known; throughout the province. In his younger days Mr. Hale was an ' outstanding oarsman, being a promin-1 ent members of the now defunct Wa- i katu Rowing Club, and during the per-! iod in which this club flourished he! | rowed at various regattas at Welling-j ton and Nelson. On March 14. 1888,: Mr. Hale had the honour of stroking; the Wakatu crew on the Wanganui ‘ ■ River, ami although not successful on : • this occasion his crow was always in ' < I the picture. In respect of his profes- i sion Mr. Hale had for manv years been ' closely identified with the Horticul- ■ tural Societies throughout the Wai- i , rarapa, and has done much to promote > l widespread enthusiasm towards 'he; ■ cultivation of trees and flowers.
